More About the Dialect Words "Zajda", "Zajdy", "Zajdki", Their Variants and Derivates

Abstract

The article discusses, on the basis of new dialect data (atlas and lexicographical data), the dialectisms zajda, zajdy, zajdki (described in 1967 by K. Zierhoffer) together with their variants and derivatives, which form a relatively numerous word family and are very well documented in the literature. Their formal variety is presented (a multitude of morphological variants zajda – f., zajdo – n., zajdy – plt., derivatives zajdka, zajdecka, zajdko, zajdek, zajdecek, zajdecuś, zajdki, zajdecki together with phonetic variants with å narrow and o < å) and semantic (polysemic word) much greater than described in the past as well as their geography. Also discussed is Kurpian zájda ‘a man who steps, walks with long strides’, zájdy 2. jok. ‘long legs of a man, especially one who steps with long strides’ and Podlasian zajdy ‘hind leg, calf’, probably homonyms, words of different origin, as indicated by their synonyms sajda, sajdy, shared with Kashubian sajda.
