Abstract

In the region of the middle Lena (Yakutia), ice and ground veins are still initiated. The paper presents a summary of fieldwork conducted in the region. It shows that the properties of the sediment, including their type and thermal regime, are key to explain the variation in periglacial phenomena. Ice veins dominate in areas with stable low ground temperatures and high humidity, where frost cracking occurs inside the permafrost. In contrast, ground veins develop in warmer sediments, with lower ground ice content, and a deeper active layer, where fracturing occurs mainly within the active layer.
