The article presents a transcript of the opening discussion at the symposium in Exeter, where a proposal was introduced to analyse the origin and evolution of tor formations and solifluction deposits in southwestern England. Attention was drawn to the potential existence of a thick weathering mantle within the pre-Pleistocene landscape, and a mechanism was proposed by which this material may have been transformed through climatic shifts that triggered solifluction processes. The evolution of tor formations and the transport of rock material under periglacial conditions were also discussed.
