Walery Łoziński's contributions to periglacial research

Walery Łoziński is widely known in world literature for coining the term “periglacial”. However, this is far from representing his contribution to the development of periglacial concepts. Łoziński created the concept of the periglacial zone in Pleistocene Europe. He also provides a basis for its spatial differentiation by distinguishing the debris zone and pointing out its importance. Łoziński explains the origins of boulder fields. He also points to the origins of loess material based on the properly identified effects of frost weathering. Łoziński's comments on the importance of southern slope exposure provided the basis for developing the problem of climatically determined asymmetry.
