Fluvio-Periglacial Accumulation in the Central Part of the Nida Basin, Central Poland

Geological investigations carried out near Jędrzejów and Pińczów revealed the presence of a series of fluvial sands with interbedded solifluction deposits, reaching up to 290 m a.s.l. These sediments, located mostly at a considerable distance from the main valleys, are not directly connected with the present-day river network. Their origin is linked to river activity under specific climatic conditions during glacial periods. The maximum water rise in the Nida Basin occurred during the Central Polish Glaciation (Riss), leading to the accumulation of fluvio-periglacial deposits on interfluves. A second, smaller accumulation phase took place during the Baltic (Würm) glaciation. The older cover today forms remnants of a high terrace, about 40 m above the modern floodplain of the Nida, while the younger cover forms a middle terrace of up to 20 m high. This two-terrace system is especially characteristic in the upper part of the Nida Basin, within the Holy Cross Mountains.
