In the eastern part of Hokkaido, North Japan, various periglacial phenomena such as involutions, frost cracks and ice-wedge casts have been observed in the tephra layers deposited during the last glacial age. Their distribution is mapped (fig. 1) and, by using some key tephra Iayers, the periods of their formation are determined (fig. 2). The paleoclimate of this region during the last glacial is reconstructed from those fossil periglacial phenomena and other data obtained recently.
