Abstract

Field observations and facies analysis indicate that most of the structures interpreted as pseudomorphoses after polygonal ice veins in the Pleistocene alluvial, lacustrine and coastal marine formed during uninterrupted sedimentation, under permafrost conditions. This process, termed “alluvial and basin cryolithogenesis”, suggests that pseudomorphoses developed both in subaerial and subaqueous environments as a regular part of sedimentary processes in permafrost regions. The co-occurrence of buried ice veins and pseudomorphoses in the same stratigraphic profiles supports the interpretation of local selective thermokarst as the dominant mechanism.
