Moraine-like deposits in the periglacial zone

Moraine-like deposits may form in both glacial and periglacial zones and often exhibit significant similarity to true morainic deposits in terms of lithology and external features. Their genesis is associated with various processes such as solifluction, fluvial activity and lacustrine sedimentation, resulting in distinctly non-glacial sedimentological differentiation. Due to their morphological and lithological resemblance, glacial and pseudomorainic deposits are difficult to distinguish from one another, requiring comprehensive field and laboratory studies. Diagnostic criteria were summarised to help in the identification of the origin of these sediments, which is essential for accurate palaeogeographical and stratigraphical reconstructions.
