The morphological study of beaches in the vicinity of Bunger Oasis (66°S, 101°E) reveals the occurrence of a warm climatic episode in the fjords, characterised by prevailing north-easterly winds. This episode corresponds to the post-glacial climatic optimum, which was followed in East Antarctica by a significant return of cold conditions, which have recently shown signs of gradual attenuation.
Bunger Oasis was covered by glaciers at least twice: during the "maximum" glaciation, which reached the edge of the continental shelf, and during the "last" glaciation, which was nearly 100 km less extensive. Massive blocks of relict ice resting on seabed shoals in the form of islands are considered to be remnants of this glacial period. A phase separating the two glaciations is marked by the development of abrasion terraces subsequently covered by moraine deposits.
