State of preservation of animal bones in the sediments of Nietoperzowa Cave in Jerzmanowice

Cave sediments in Poland, as shown by previous studies, usually contain abundant bone remains. It is known that these sediments were at least partly formed under periglacial conditions. Using animal bone remains from Nietoperzowa Cave in Jerzmanowice as an example, the state of preservation of bones from interglacial layers and from layers formed in a periglacial environment has been described. Bone fragments from the periglacial layers are heavily cracked and angular, whereas bones from the interglacial layers are well-rounded and resemble bone tools. These differences are clearly visible only in bone material derived from the part of the cave deposits near the entrance. In the sections located farther from the entrance, the boundaries between the layers become indistinct, and almost all bones are rounded. Bone fragments from periglacially disturbed layers are similar to the forms from Torell Land that were described by Różycki.
