Periglacial microrelief in the Tatras and on the Babia Góra

Investigations were conducted mainly in the Western Tatras and in the Babia Góra mountain-group in the Beskid Wysoki (the Carpathians). The predominant forms of periglacial microrelief recognized here, are: thufurs, soliflual tongues, soliflual garland terraces, rubble fields and rubble gutters, as well as structural soils, both large and miniature. These periglacial forms were found to be spread throughout the total surface of the altitudinal zone of the Tatras, up to the upper wood-limit. Apart from climatic conditions, lithological properties have also influenced their distribution. Thufurs and soliflual forms occur predominantly on bedrock consisting of sedimentary rocks (limestone, shales), while the forms and structures due to sorting (reminiscent of miniature structural soils) are underlain with crystalline schists and gneiss. The activities of man – either direct or indirect (construction of touring roads, grazing of sheep) promote the development of periglacial processes. For that reason, forms of periglacial microrelief, may be frequently encountered along touring-paths and on excessively exploited mountain pastures.
Present-day periglacial forms occur in the Tatras in association with vestiges of Pleistocene forms. Large polygonal networks are overgrown with vegetation and do not show any symptoms of vitality, while the „living" forms rather belong to the type of miniature structural soils.
