Frost fissures and involutions in sands and gravels of the Vistula Valley near Tarnobrzeg

Slot and involution forms were identified in the gravel deposits that make up the floodplain terrace of the Vistula Valley. This area is located 6–14 metres below the present-day ground surface. Due to divergent pollen, macrofossil and radiocarbon (¹⁴C) dating results, it is currently impossible to determine the age of these sediments with certainty. While pollen and macrofossil analyses suggest the end of the Baltic glaciation, radiocarbon dating (GrN 4868, Piaseczno No. 1) indicates an age of 40,700 ±2,000 years BP. This corresponds to the end of the older Würm (Szczecin stage). The plant assemblage identified in the pollen and macrofossil analyses indicates a relatively warm climate, comparable to pre-boreal conditions. However, the simultaneous presence of fissure and involution structures indicates the existence of permafrost during this period. The author attributes the clear formation of frost forms to local environmental conditions, particularly the high moisture content of the sediments.
