The scale of Quaternary changes in slope profiles is based on the values of surface lowering observed in late Pliocene peneplains. This lowering ranges from a few metres in the case of very hard sandstones to 40–60 m in the case of soft sandstones and shales. For the three main cold periods of the Pleistocene, the cumulative lowering reaches at least 30 m. This value is sufficient for the majority of Carpathian slopes, which are primarily composed of solifluction deposits, to develop the convex–concave profile typical of medium mountains and plateaus subjected to periglacial morphogenesis.
