Abstract

The variety of present-day and fossil periglacial phenomena in northern England is considerable. An accurate interpretation of the geomorphology of this region is impossible until these phenomena are completely researched and their importance is correctly evaluated. The British Isles have had few devotees to the study of periglacial phenomena, and published literature contains only infrequent references to features in northern England. While some progress has been made, particularly by Hay and Caine, the exact role of periglacial processes in shaping the British landscape remains largely unknown. The author emphasizes that a proper understanding of the regional geomorphology requires a thorough and systematic investigation of the diverse periglacial features, both active and relict, that are present in the area.
