This paper focuses on the development of landforms under conditions of permafrost and deep seasonal freezing in the high mountains of the Tian-Shan. Permafrost in this region is generally found above 3000 m, with an overall harsh climate characterized by average annual temperatures below 0°C, a short summer with frequent night frosts, and a long winter. The author highlights various factors influencing permafrost development, such as wind and cloud cover, and notes that the total permafrost area in the Soviet Tian-Shan is approximately 64,000 km², or about 18% of the total area.
The main body of the study describes several periglacial landforms, primarily focusing on frost mounds (formes de gonflement) and patterned ground (sols structurés), including polygons, stone circles, and sorted strips. The author differentiates between seasonal and multi-annual frost mounds, describing their structure and formation mechanisms. The paper also discusses the origin of patterned ground, attributing it to a combination of cryostatic pressure, frost fractures, and solifluction, and notes that most of these forms are directly linked to permafrost regions.
