Fossil soil of the transitional Pleistocene and Holocene phase in the continental dunes of Central Poland

Within the dunes in the area of Central Poland there has been found well formed rustysoil which was developed during the oldest phase of the Holocene. Its Preboreal age was determined by radiocarbon dating of plant remnants and on the basis of its stratigraphical position in relation to the other dated fossil soils in dunes.
The author describes pedological features of Preboreal soil and the conditions under which it developed. The origin of the soil has been connected with specific, grassland and grassy-forest vegetation which encroached the dunes after the phase of active eolian processes during the Younger Dryas period.
The development of rusty soil was interrupted in many places by sand accumulation induced probably by mesolithic man's activity or it was completed during the Boreal time when on dunes there appeared a coniferous forest which caused podsolization.
