Fossil periglacial phenomena in NE Belgjum

During two days, the Symposium "Periglaciaire et Paleogeographie du Quatemaire, Belgique-Pays-Bas 1978" presented a selection of fossil periglacial phenomena currently observed at Kempen. These phenomena are of various geomorphological, sedimentological, or pedological nature, but most are related to the last glaciation. The difficulties of interpreting the precise environmental conditions shaping a given sediment, structure, or relief, as well as the location of this environment on a reconstructed time scale, were demonstrated. In the case of cryopedological phenomena, determining the timing is often hampered by the difficulty of relating cryoturbation to its contemporary topographic surface, and ultimately by proving the existence of fossil permafrost and determining the depth of the active layer.
