Abstract

Background: The article provides a review of the research described in the literature on the application of Data Envelopment Analysis method in various areas and sectors of the economy, with particular emphasis on the retail sector. Not only is the literature review to verify the lack of application of the efficiency measurement tool (DEA) with regard to retail entities in Poland but also to confirm the usage of this method for the evaluation of retailers’ efficiency in foreign countries.

Research purpose: The aim of the article is to identify and assess empirical research findings on evaluating the efficiency of retail entities using DEA method, which were conducted in Poland and around the world. The specific objectives encompass the identification of the DEA models applied as well as the consideration of these models in terms of, inter alia, the groups of inputs and outputs used.

Methods: In the first stage, examples from the domestic literature of the usage of the DEA method as an efficiency measurement tool were identified and presented. Then, foreign researches were analyzed in terms of the DEA usage in retail sector, in particular: (1) the type of DEA model used, (2) the variables applied in the models in terms of inputs and outputs.

Conclusions: The conducted analyses confirmed the possibility of usage of the DEA method for the evaluation of the Polish retail entities efficiency and showed an existing research gap in this area. It was found that the available domestic literature sources do not provide with studies in which the DEA method would be used as a tool for assessment of the efficiency of retail entities.
